For such a small and simple thing, toothpick is a very convenient thing to carry with you. In addition to their obvious use in keeping teeth clean, they have been used by generations of chefs and bakers as a way to test the maturity of cakes, or to attach pineapple rings and black cherries to baked ham. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the humble toothpick's versatility, because it has many surprising household uses.

1. Repair the leaking hose

During the summer months, your garden hose can sometimes be abused a lot and - especially when it is kinked - may leak once or twice along its length. This will reduce the pressure on the nozzle or sprinkler, and may also produce waste water. To quickly repair, find the leak point and insert the thin tip of the toothpick into the hole as hard as possible. Cut off the excess so that the end of the toothpick is flush with the hose, then carefully dry the area and wrap it with tape. The patch will not last forever, but it can extend the service life of the hose for several months until you can easily replace it.

2. Remove the scale on the shower head

Over time, minerals in the local water supply system sometimes clog the small holes in the shower head. This limits the flow of water, and over time, it can lead to poor shower results. To solve this problem, soak the shower nozzle in vinegar solution or commercial descaling solution。After soaking and rinsing, physically remove the softened deposits with the tip of the toothpick (you may need to soak more than once). The toothpick is strong enough to remove scale, but unlike metal tools, it will not damage the shower nozzle. The same technique applies to your garden hose nozzles and sprinklers.

3、Save salad dressing

Making your own salad dressing is a good way to maximize freshness and reduce additives, but when you are pressed for time, it is more convenient to buy bottled salad dressing from the supermarket. However, they do have a big inconvenience, that is, they tend to spit out more spices than you really want. A simple toothpick can solve this problem. Don't tear off the plastic wrap for the next bottle, but use a toothpick to puncture the seal in several places.Start with a small amount, then squeeze the bottle to see how much comes out. Generally, thinner dressings require fewer holes, while thicker dressings require more holes. Once you are satisfied with the way it flows, simply cover the bottle and return it to the refrigerator for future use.
